It's the most wonderful time of the year - BACK TO SCHOOL!

August 13, 2018

Our kids are heading back to school! We will spend a good part of this month getting school clothes and supplies purchased, going to class registrations, scheduling health physicals and more! It’s also a good time to start transitioning back into a routine to keep your kids on track for a healthy start to the school year.

Most kids spend the summer with more freedom, fewer rules, running wild, and eating snacks throughout the day!! Now is the time to rein that in. Here are three tips to help with the back-to-school transition:

  1.  “Getting enough sleep is critical for a child to be successful in school. Children who do not get enough sleep have difficulty concentrating and learning”. Every age is different when it comes to the amount of sleep recommended. The National Sleep Foundation recommends ages 3-5 should get 10-13 hours; ages 6-13 need 9-11 hours; teens 14+ should get 8-10 hours a night. Start going to bed an hour earlier and waking up earlier to get back on schedule. Also, have children turn off electronic devices well before bedtime.

  2. Get your child back into the habit of eating three regular meals a day; breakfast, lunch and dinner. Studies show that children who eat a nutritious breakfast function better. Some schools provide breakfast for children, if yours does not make sure they have time to eat a breakfast that contains some protein!!

  3. Backpacks are HEAVY! Talk to teachers to see if there are ways to lighten the load and don’t bring extra unnecessary materials back and forth. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that kids always use both shoulder straps when wearing a backpack to avoid muscle strain.

Going back to school is hard for parents and it can be hard for the kids, too. If you need help, the schools have many resources you can use. You can always find additional information on this topic and many others from the American Academy of Pediatrics at healthychildren.org
